What is Obesity?
A person is obese when their body mass is higher than 30. The BMI (Body Mass Index) measures a person’s weight in relation to their height, giving them a score. A normal BMI is considered 18.5 to 24.9
Worldwide, the total number of obese people has reached a staggering 2.1 billion, which makes up about 30% of the total population. This number continues to rise, with over 3 million people each year dying from obesity. The worldwide rate of obesity has tripled since 1975.
Childhood overweight and obesity is a worldwide epidemic that affects 340 million (1 in 6) 5-17 year olds. 28% of Australian boys and girls, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), are considered overweight or obese.
Australian Obesity Statistics
Two thirds (67%) of Australian adults are either overweight or living with obesity
There are 900,000 more people living with obesity today (not including those who are overweight), compared to just 3 years ago
The number of people with obesity in Australia has more than doubled in the past decade from 2.7 million to 5.8 million
Researchers say if the current rate continues, 40% of Australian adults will be obese within the next 10 years
“The biggest benefit this program has had on our kids is their change in attitude towards fitness and physical activity. Last year our students fitness improved, as an overall average, of 24%”
PrincipAL – Windsor South Public School
“Until now, it has been relatively time consuming, costly and difficult to obtain accurate data on the fitness levels of our children. FiT AS® is a very cost-effective and speedy way to collect this data and provide Action Plans to help reverse the current growing cycle of childhood obesity”
Professor – Exercise Physiology
“This is a non evasive way to measure the fitness of a child and therefore the health of a child.
FiT AS® not only gives an objective and accurate assessment of fitness, but it provides valuable data in preventing childhood obesity”
Associate Professor – Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes
